Obesity is defined as having an excessive amount of body fat. It is typically measured using the Body Mass Index (BMI), a simple calculation of weight in relation to height. A BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese, while a BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight. However, it’s important to note that BMI has limitations, as it doesn’t account for factors like muscle mass, bone density, and distribution of fat. Despite these limitations, BMI is still one of the best indicators of risk factors associated with excess fat.
Health Implications of obesity:
- Joint problems and reduced mobility.
- Sleep disorders like sleep apnea.
- Mental health issues, including depression and low self-esteem.
- Obesity places a significant burden on healthcare systems, increasing healthcare costs.
- Reduced productivity and increased absenteeism in the workforce due to obesity-related health issues.
Social and Psychological Effects:
- Stigmatization and discrimination against individuals with obesity, leading to social isolation and decreased quality of life.
- Psychological distress and negative body image.

Oftentimes there’s a desire to lose weight but an inability to reach the weight loss goals needed and desired. At Open Door we provide a comprehensive weight loss program which includes personalized nutritional counseling coupled with medications to include semaglutide (brand name Wygovy or Ozempic). Semaglutide is FDA approved for the treatment of obesity and average weight loss seen during clinical trials was 15-20% of one’s body weight. Semaglutide coupled with dietary changes and exercise can be the key to unlock weight loss in those struggling with obesity.
To ensure the safety of our patients we do a complete evaluation and workup to determine if this medication is indicated and safe prior to beginning any treatment. We are also committed to continued monitoring for the health and safety of our patients along and for any side effects that may occur. If you are interested in discussing our weight loss program further please contact the clinic to schedule your appointment.
